"Volunteer mercenary"..... Now that's .....something new....
What, by the brass balls of Baelzebub, are those supposed to be?
I suppose they’re regular mercs who sign the contract regularly, as opposed to being pressganged?

In any case, what wendelin did is smart: you hire the best 50 you can get out of both sides, and the rest of the mercs move on as their contracts lapse into literal inactivity. Even assuming both sides has a roughly equal numbers sans mercs, Breithilde now has 50 extra good mercs-turned-retainers, and wendelin’s team…

I think a better translation would be "freelancer". Basically a lance for hire, and the origin of the word.

Just like most people who are free to choose who to work for, people gravitate towards the employer with the best terms.

@Wolvenworks, Press gangs weren't really a thing until... 16thC-ish.. At which time the old mercenary companies all but disappeared in lieu of "national" armies and conscription.

@ShiitakeCat, Freelancers also weren't a Thing until the 16thC, and even then really only in the "German" territories.
Mostly as "replacement" of the old mercenary companies as military specialists.

lol spontaneous job fair on the battlefield. :dogkek:

I'm sure someone else has done something similar before in another story, but it's still rare enough to be funny instead of another overdone cliche that just makes you roll your eyes.

If the kingdom doesn't allow the use of any real force against another kingdom noble, what exactly is preventing the Blois side from still stretching this on and on? Wendelin should just go and shackle the whole Blois army (if you can call it that) in chains. Maybe it would be breach of etiquette, but he could state that the Blois side was the one to break customs first by unreasonably stretching the conflict beyond what could be considered acceptable. Seeing how Wendelin is a hero of the kingdom, I reckon he wouldn't have any powerful enemies who would try to hurt him by taking the Blois side just for the heck of it. Most powerful nobles, in fact, would want to avoid getting caught in a stupidly prolonged conflict against weaker but stubborn opponents.

Perhaps you’re not getting that i mean the concept of “being forcibly recruited” (a pressgang), not the formal term/word “pressgang” itself. Ofc, the concept itself should’ve reasonably existed way before the term “pressgang” had existed…medieval lords were not as reasonable as colonial lords.

Money dear boy strategy works once again

Although it's kinda surprising this solution is pretty rare among isekais and even history-inspire series

Also mangaka deadass copy pasted Godwin four times this chapter

Likely referring to volunteer soldiers that are associated with a country, basically a mercenary with loyalty to a specific nation.
This would mean the mercenary will always work with the country they were in, but can pick and choose which wars to fight in, with added potential incentives of being scouted by a noble as a formal knight, which would come with alot more benefits and more than anything, a stable paycheck.
