Well in French Earl and Count are basically the same and mean « comte »

Don’t quite matter; it was clear that Wendelin got promoted from count so he couldn’t possibly be a count…and by standard EN TLs use the English system of nobility, and IIRC that’s usually what everyone uses for reference on nobility ranks. It would be incredibly unusual for a writer to use a French or German system except if it’s highly relevant to the setting (eg. Youjo Senki actually using the Von system since Tanya got made into a Von Degurechaff)
