So I guess he's going to be using the money from the bazaar to, effectively, buy out the disgruntled employees, then use magic to improve those products and then sell those in the capital.
Either that, or he's going to use magic to smelt the red ore...

The problem with all this talk about poverty and bad economics is that the folks still live in those fabulous mansions.

In the distant past, common people in more remote regions often paid their taxes in goods and exchanged goods they produced to other goods they needed. Of course they would have liked money and if they had the opportunity, they might have taken cattle, for example, and go to a town to sell it normally. Generally speaking, possessing coins might have been so irregular for them that the feudal lords or king's men needed to accept grain/other produce, furs/pelts, and such as tax payment.

it seems to me they need to find a product that would drive merchants to travel to there country for trade. they would need something unique and in demand to justify the remoteness. Maybe that ore will be the answer.

They need 2 things.

1. A suitable product that makes merchant want to send caravans to buy stuff, since they would naturally take things with them to sell also so they don't waste space.

2. A safer travel path so merchant and people can travel to and from the area safely.

I guess the answer will be in the forest.

The craftsman complaining because of the quality of the products should up their game.
If they are afraid of better product then get better and produce better products...

On second thought, given how the world they live in is with magic an all, everyone from that territory has to up their game.
Weakness is sin and they are weak.

To be fair even among nobles, coinage was less common than people think, the power of a noble was generally based in the material goods or trades they controlled, though coin money did exist, that was not the true source of wealth in the pre-roman era.
Even in the medevil era, what we consider as money was not too common, it existed but overall, there wasn't really a whole lot for the poor and middle class equivalents to buy, entertainment for example was quite uncommon in the past and was usually a wandering minstrel or the town elder's telling stories, in cities they might have festivals alot, but most entertainment didn't go much further than say, a book or a pub, if the person could even read.
This was actually for the most part, true into the mid 1900's even in the us among farming communities.

@mahtan except it doesn't work like that at all. The chapter even states that they're so poor that they cannot even conceive of how to properly spend money thus creating a monetary economy. It reminds me of an article I read where a shoe company had as a selling point "for every pair you buy we give a pair to an African in need". Which sounds good until the journalist discovered that by doing so they had killed the shoemaker and cobbler market in these African towns. That's like saying to these guys "just up your game". They don't have the money or the means to compete with cheap, high quality, factory made shoes. It's just not possible. And same with the town in the manga. They can barely get salt, how do you propose they get the ores required for higher quality goods? Or the equipment to process it? They don't have magic and they can barely get anyone to come trade to begin with.

They don't have magic because they don't want to, it was said many times that in that world magic is something anyone can do if they want to.
There is no excuse for people in worlds like this one to one have at least the basic strength to defend themselves from monster attacks.

Also the reason they can't obtain salt is because they don't have where to get it from not because they don't have the will to obtain salt.

Since you talked about it IRL the food relieves send to Africa also are killing their base economy, farming, should we stop sending food relieve to them?

how about you (MC) level some grounds and create a safe trade route with your amazing magic power? that way the merchant could travel more frequently to your town

I'd say the chief problem the Baumeister territories have in general seems to be that the lord of the territory itself didn't exactly receive the education needed to actually be able to govern the place properly nor to be able to solve the various issues outside of just throwing people or money at the problem.

@I mean did they say that? I just perused the first few chapters and his companions literally state they tried to learn magic but couldn't. And it says MC is unique in his magical ability and is the only one who got a magical scholarship. MC's teacher even says in chapter 2 that magic is something you teach yourself. So no, not anyone can learn it. And even if they could how could a peasant learn it? They don't have free time to study magic, they literally start doing chores and working as soon as they can, especially in a small impoverished village. All the magicians we see are pretty much nobles or high ranking, I'm willing to bet if everyone could learn magic they would try their best to, they don't go "magic that could improve my lifestyle by an unimaginable degree? Nah I'm happy labouring all day every day."

As for the salt...yes. They can't get it. Nowhere did I say they can't get salt because they don't want to.

As for IRL I made a simple and apt comparison. I wasn't speaking about a broad term relief effort which can only exist for a multitude of reasons, one of which includes a good transportation network and infrastructure which is not present in the story. You can't compare them. Because what this chapter attempts to convey is that our MC made some large blunders giving them amazing products that cannot be recreated by his village.

Let's take the bowl shown in the chapter for instance. Let's say the high quality one has a lifespan 4x greater than the regular. Now the blacksmiths can't make them. They don't have the ore or the tools to process it. We're literally shown they're so poor that as they travel they pick up garbage red ore (oxidized iron) in order to sell it for whatever they can. So MC provides way better equipment than the village blacksmiths can produce. And they're out of work. Now assuming easy numbers such as a pot has a lifespan of a week (I'm purposefully making it ridiculously small) then a blacksmith won't need to replace that pot for a week. But with MCs stuff that suddenly goes to say 4 weeks. Now in reality those pots will most likely last years. What work will blacksmiths have? They won't have any. And they'll shut down. So then MC becomes responsible for the village. What limited self-sustainability they had is gone. MC needs to either provide the tools and ore to the blacksmiths (since they don't have the means to get any of that themselves) or MC needs to constantly provide for the people since all the blacksmiths are out of work. This is the problem that MC realizes he created and will try to avoid. Because as soon as they become dependent on him they're screwed. He can easily teleport stuff to them so what's the problem? Well what if MC doesn't want to constantly travel to the town? What happens if MC dies? It's not solving the problem which is that the village is in the middle of nowhere with nothing to offer. They literally had to have their chief beg larger cities to sell them salt. You can't just "try harder and make a better product".

@Grimwear What you have just described is also known as "The Walmart Problem". Big box store, typically Walmart, comes into a town, provides goods cheap and efficiently in a single place, far greater variety than local can afford to bring in, or have the logistics to do so. All local stores close down, reliance on big box store increases.... and if ever that store closes, total socioeconomic devestation that destroys that place utterly.

> So this is now the start of the real bloody conflict between MC and his brother?
Maybe, during the time when MC will start to build his own domain, and build roads connecting to his father domain and or the capital, maybe his brother will get really jealous of his accomplishment for bringing the brothers citizen happiness and joy rather than him.

The glory received is for MC rather than Kurt, and it sparks the real evil emotion of Kurt...

Furthermore, if MC can acquire those airship at least 1, it further cements the evil intent of his brother to make a move against him.

I mean, Kurt might be having an evil intent against him because he realize the he cannot compete with MC when it comes to domain building...

Thats the gist of what im expecting in the future arcs....

I'm not sure how big of a problem that is. Is it just your theory? The aid mostly goes to catastrophe areas where the people simply can't grow food even if they wanted to. It doesn't help that in poor, underdeveloped areas people often breed far beyond the capacity of the environment to sustain the population growth, which creates a vicious circle. Some of the catastrophes are man-made, that is, wars/civil wars or horrible decisions from a corrupt government, some are purely environmental, caused by natural processes.

One more interesting problem causing hunger is farmers not actually producing regular food for domestic consumption but producing stuff for export (such as cacao), which is much more profitable for them. This in turn may create a need to import grain from abroad, which may not be affordable for destitute locals. China is also continously tightening its grip on Africa, as it depends on importing food to feed its billion plus population.

The worst foreign aid is always money. The best is educating the locals and helping them build a stable and sustainable economy they can keep running on their own. I doubt food, medicine, and such sent to catastrophe areas have ever hurt anyone that much. It may have caused minor troubles when criminals or terrorists have seized the aid shipments for their own uses, but those are individual incidents.

Relevant to this series, the best anyone could do for that particular fied would be to replace the leadership with actually competent people and try to integrate the area with the rest of the kingdom with better roads, and to build some kind of industry in the place that would naturally attract traders and bring income.

@WeldJerda The single worst problem of this series has always been the MC dude, who doesn't possess anything resembling his own free will, ambition, desires, dreams, etc. He's like a bottle floating on water and following the sea currents, wherever they might take him. He barely ever makes any decisions for himself. I would be exceedingly pleasantly surprised if he came up with some radical solution to fix the problems in this fief, overruling his idiotic relatives opinions if needed. I won't expect that to happen, though, not with this MC.
