I remember this from Animax, a bit too slice of life and angsty for me.
I kept hoping for something interesting to happen - like the damn wall getting demolished by an invasion of black winged angels maybe.

Was curious because the anime seems popular. Too bad there are only 4 chapters.

Great work, ty!

Haibane Renmei is incontrovertibly among the greatest anime of all time, and I'm glad the art book and some doujinshi have been translated here.

For those complaining of a lack of chapters-there are no more chapters. Abe explains in one of the doujinshi that once the series was picked up by Circle, he would avoid spoiling the series with doujinshi, keeping things mostly lighthearted and ancillary.

The Ganbatte, Rakka! doujinshi linked in the series description is a light-hearted conclusion to the series, detailing the departures of the protagonists we knew, and showing that each new generation has to take up 'parenting' the next, and nobody ever feels ready for it. I think the anime closes things up beautifully but if you have lingering questions that's a good place to look.

I really enjoy the anime. I give it a rewatch every 3 or 4 years. And I think the reason is because it's such a perfect blend of slice-of-life and mystery. Cute girls doing everyday stuff, sure, but you're always wondering what they are, where they are. Who are the townspeople? Who are the caretakers? What's beyond the city wall? But none of the questions impose on being able to enjoy the story for what it is. Heck, the answers would probably do more harm than good.

The only shame is that the bluray transfers are so godawful... I sincerely hope that the original material is still stored in some japanese studio's warehouse and someone stumbles across them in the future so they can be rescanned properly.
