Imagine if there is a secret order of lesbians called "Sisterhood of Class-S" (redundant, I know) who infiltrate all girl schools and leave subliminal messages to lure impressionable young girls into the path of lesbianism Class S. The agents work in pair and use roses for code names. Now that Kasumi has discovered the secret, she and Haruyo will be recruited into their organization to spread the Gospel of the Roses. I would read the shit out of that manga.

Going to back to the actual story, there are many things this chapter reveals. First thing, Haruyo didn't come up with the letter exchange, which should be obvious (sorry, girl). She just treats the original sender as a divine messenger, but to Kasumi this opens up a possibility there might be another person who is more worthy of being with oneesama. Oneesama has given her so much, so the best love she can offer is to find her someone better.

This doesn't only speaks for the depth of Kasumi's self-loathing, but also her fear of what the relationship with Haruyo would bring if kept unchecked. There is no way to deny this: what she feels for Haruyo is sexual desire (not gonna lie, I didn't expect that Kasumi actually wanted to feel Haruyo's chest last chapter). Kasumi is grappling with her sexuality and her low self-esteem at the same time. She longs for the touch of the other girl badly, but also alarmed at how enamoured she is and ashamed of her desire, all the while feeling that she's not deserving of affection. Since oneesama will leave her someday (or so she believes), it's better for her to be prepared and take a step back now. Our girl is a bundled mess of complicated feelings, even for a teenager. Btw, pages 24-46 are so charged that it feels almost wrong to look at. This is what actual suggestive content looks like.

Now to the new character. Who is Asai Sayori? We know she's a Kasumi's senior and in the painting club. She might be the writer of the letter Haruyo got, but is she the originator or just another link in the chain of the letter exchange ritual? Could it be that the whole thing is a school tradition that went back to a shadowy cabal the olden days of Class-S? The title is "Dear Flowers that Bloom in the Days of Yore" after all. At the very least I predict that Kasumi and Haruyo is not the first pair of "sisters" in that school. This opens up interesting venues for the series to explore. For the meantime, Sayori seems to be aware of who Kasumi is and what's she and Haruyo have been doing.

Edit: How could I forget to mention the fact that Kasumi confessed her LOVE for Haruyo in her monologue? This series really overloads my sense.

Worst case scenario of Haruyo leaving her for the first sender is the guaranteed conclusion to her, completely denying all the letters and connection the two of them have shared because if it's with Kasumi, then to her it's as good as nothing. Ohhhh sad

Called the heartbeat actually being about boobs the previous chapter, but didn't think Kasumi would admit it to herself so quickly. At least she isn't confused about her feelings, gotta give her that. Her problem is literally everything else related to the relationship.

Now gotta guess Sayori is just gonna tell her she's the kind that likes to watch instead.
I thought it was just an excuse to hug her

Kasumi is in love with a girl, but right now that girl is a mix of the older sister persona as performed by Haruyo and Haruyo's physical body. Moreover, Kasumi's impression of "the real Haruyo" is now drifting further from reality than the onee-sama persona (since that is at least the role Haruyo wanted to play from the beginning). So I don't think we can say that Kasumi loves Haruyo (the whole girl, goofy 9th grader included) as of this chapter.

As for Kasumi using the hug to feel her onee-sama's chest: I think that's likely part of it. But given that the lightest touch from her onee-sama can make her flustered, the way that hug is depicted and explained by Kasumi has implications beyond the specific body part Kasumi's face is indirectly touching. More than Haruyo's chest, the drawings emphasize the tightness of the embrace, and Kasumi's hands. She even reflects on the urge "to get even one layer out of my way".

I wonder if there's some layer of symbolism here that is Kasumi trying to get at the "real Haruyo", to find some anchor of reality for all of this allegory she's found herself in. Not the onee-sama, not the kouhai, not the letter-writer, not the schoolgirl - but "Haruyo, the one who will help me find my way", type thing.

the way her hands were clutching onto Haruyo's back through the jacket in that one panel feels like someone stumbling through a storm and is afraid that the rock she's found will slip from her fingers and she'll be lost.

That was a hard 'love' by the way.

Kasumi's trauma gets clearer. There's the self-loathing expressed in self-sabotage. The belief that she has no value, offering nothing to Haruyo and that Haruyo might only be with her out of pity. She's said this before, 'why do you always give me what I want.' It makes her uncomfortable. There's the return of fearing becoming dependent on another, that Onee-sama could disappear from her life and she needs to be ready. The fear of intimacy is stronger than ever. That she wasn't sure she could ever love like this, that the greatest love she can offer is to step out of the way. She didn't want to taint Onee-sama with her ugliness, was afraid she's the only one getting turned on by this.

Haruyo is still on that fantasy Onee-sama pedestal. From this chapter it's like Kasumi doesn't even believe Haruyo shares those feelings, that she angelically overlooks and accepts that part of her. But considering Haruyo is so innocent she didn't notice the way she was touching Kasumi, she'd never have thought Kasumi was after a faceful of boobs. Kasumi takes one soft comment and twists it into Haruyo obsessing over the letter's sender. She assumes Haruyo would be happy with someone else. And in doing so, she's giving up their secret.

Since we haven't seen in Haruyo's head in a while, it's easy to get caught up in some lesser misconceptions. She's straining herself as much as Kasumi is to keep their relationship going. Trying hard to work off the guilt she felt for abandoning Kasumi. She doesn't understand the times Kasumi's self-loathing slips through. She isn't intentionally being a gay nightmare for her repressed little sister (older). Haruyo is a confused middle schooler wearing a mask. And if Kasumi keeps this up that mask is going to crack.

I won't spoil much but if you don't trust this manga yet: If you're seriously concerned about Sayori, don't be.

The manga practically always uses the Japanese translation of sub rosa, literally "under the rose." This is just as obvious in Japanese as in English so yeah, let's just say Haruyo was distracted by her cute imouto. But sub rosa sounds cooler so I'm not going to deny Sayori her moment.

The dual nature of cold is back: it's both pretense for the invitation to warm herself under Haruyo's coat and the pretext Kasumi uses to be distant. Kasumi is purposefully choosing the cold in a way that explores the old themes of repressed, forbidden sexuality in Class S but through a repurposed angle. The manga's also expanding on rose symbolism, between constricting thorns and hanging roses you've seen in the past.

The concept of 'the greatest love you can offer' being to step away came up in both protagonists of Igarashi's previous manga, Dominant. I'll have more to say on that when I get around to translating AriSaku's Bluesky extras, but Igarashi seems to like exploring twisted outlets for love.

We're now .5 chapters away from being caught up. I'm going to be working on Sylph and Aizawa's latest chapters now so don't expect 10 until after the 28th, when the second half releases. After that I'll likely start uploading half chapters bimonthly going forward.

In other recent news, Igarashi was going to draw a 'violent' doujinshi for November's COMITIA event, but currently only has lewd yuri thoughts on the brain and will likely do that instead.
It is a mystery why Igarashi now has lewd yuri thoughts on the brain.
damn, I must say you are picking some of the best series on this website for translation, 90% bangers (and even those that are not bangers start as such)

She 100% lied about wanting to hear her heartbeat. She wanted to touch her boobs in a horny way.
