Damn, this chapter hit REALLY close to home for me. This chapter actually made me stop and go “oh wait, shit, this might actually be me.”
Up until about two years ago, I spent the better part of most of my young adult life, middle school through university, clinically depressed (by my third year at university it got to the point where I didn’t necessarily want to die, but just didn’t want to live anymore). When you get stuck in your own head on things, it’s almost impossible to stop yourself from spiraling.
For me, I had good friends and family who (once I actually stopped bottling everything up and actually opened up to people) were able to get me to make a number of extremely large life decisions (dropping out of university, cutting certain people out of my life and trying to rely on/trust certain people more, switching a bunch of different medications, completely changing my career path from white collar work to blue collar), and to be completely honest it was and is a massive pain in the ass to actually make a lot of those changes and follow through with them on a daily basis, but in the end I’ve felt a lot of those changes ended up being worth it. There are still bad days or even weeks here or there, but there have been many more days where I’ve gotten to experience fantastic things thay I never would have been able to do if I had continued to live my life the way I did.
Sorry, there wasn’t really much more to this anecdote other than that this chapter had a very real portrayal of depression/anxiety that I haven’t seen done well in many other pieces of media, so I apologize if this has come off as some random mf on the internet rambling. Mental health is a very hard thing to discuss in a nuanced way, and I’ve felt the last several chapters of this manga have done that (at least to me) in a way that feels tangible and relatable to real life. Hopefully Kurose and Haimiya are able to continue be there for and support each other through their rough patches, and I hope we can continue to see them enjoying their lives and youths to the fullest
