I don't think they're embarrassed by it.

I think they straight up don't understand it themselves and have accidentally written depth into the character interactions that isn't supposed to be there.

I completely agree, there are so many series which have completely nonsensical strains of logic in how social situations and interactions that happen and they reflect the writers biases and understandings. Like the setup in chapter one basically completely discounts any reasonable or stable person feeling actual affection. Their romance is quite literally the romance in the final 10 minutes of Gone Girl where Ben Affleck realises he has to keep Amy happy to stop her destroying his life. Real romantic feelings would be nigh impossible.

The fact she hasn't addressed it and likely never will also shows that he really doesn't get what a completely deranged course of action it was. It is truly in the realm of wacky hijinks for the author.

i don't understand how Shirota can have the dignity to stay with someone like Takamine anymore.
In this chapter ALONE she kicks him in the crotch which was unnecessary if she wanted to keep him quiet, and then keeps reminding him over and over that she doesn't want people to know that shes "associating with him".
