Its been years since I first read or seen this part in the anime, but every time I think of Hajime no Ippo, the scene of Kamogawa punching the log into the hill is the first to come to my mind. I dont know why it stuck out to me so much, but I think about it randomly every once in a while.

yeah let's just ignore what Yuki wants, she's just walking motivation not actually a person, I mean could you imagine if we actually had to think about her desires, so glad this manga keeps her in a 2D box

Brother almost all the side characters only serve as motivations or obstacles with little personality in this manga.

Completely untrue. Every single boxer in this manga has a distinct personality, side character or otherwise. Every single coach in this manga has a distinct personality, side character or otherwise. Ippo's classmate bully, the main reporter, his mother, Sendo's grandmother, the homeless guy who scams Takamura, even the farmers and hunters we meet throughout, all of them have distinct personalities.

But as soon as it comes to love interests, you could literally swap any of them (except for Kumi and the reporter ) and it wouldn't change anything. Any of their desires or ideas are limited to their designated love interests and no one else. They're not characters, just motivational eyecandy.

If so the first fight Ippo used the Dempsy roll what was the guy's most distinctive personality trait? Even just his name off the top of your head? It's rare for any boxer in this manga to have a personality just you spend a lot of time with the main antagonists of each arc which you view as side characters. Now looking at the female characters so far you couldn't swap any of them for example Nanako is a relentless ass who doesn't care about Ippo's relationships with other women because in her eyes she still has a chance because Kumi and him aren't official and she's a tease. The only shared trait is that they can get pretty petty. In your own words completely untrue.
