Honestly, the real dumbass is the father, despite being a teacher, and a single father; he chose to risk his life for a doll?
It wasn't even like he risked his life for saving a child or his own wife's memento or something.
That death was extremely poorly written.

From how i understand the story, the baby is still a monster. So one day i could just kill him and everyone in his village just by throwing a tantrum and he doesnt even know if the dragon is sentient or if the baby form is just a deception to abuse a humans love for cute things. And for all of that he attacked a powerful noble. This one shot seems terrible thought out.

A manga like this is all about the feels and you just have to believe that the power of love (in this case reluctant stepdaddy's love for the dragon child and vice versa) will conquer all. If you can't just let yourself go with that flow, well there's always Oyasumi Punpun or Bokurano.
