Jump has been striking out hard with these "duo chases a niche passion" manga after Bakuman. Except people seemed to like Tenmaku Cinema and Green Green Greens while this one barely got a peep.
At least Monochrome Days on Mangaplus is doing alright.

This one felt like it could have lasted quite a while, they hadn't even gotten a full team yet, much less really interesting character dynamics, so to have the plug pulled before even a full year, not even given a chance
I’ve been thinking that this sort of story about a passion project requires some level of immersion through a coherent technical bedrock on which the plot is based. So it stands to reason that the only story that took off was the one where the mangaka naturally had that technical background. Anyone with the know-how to write a convincing technical story about anything other than drawing manga (or other hobbies) would probably have a better career by not drawing manga.
Surely there’s room for a car modding manga at least. Turbocharging lawnmowers and dropping a Chevy LS in a miata, that kind of stuff.
