I am always so curious if its translators failing to understand the difference between envy and jealousy or is it asian culture.

Cause the emotion you are feeling is Envy... one day they will get it right and I'll jump out of my seat in shock.

from the understanding i have, jealousy is more tied to a fear of losing something you have to a third party, whether it be a relationship or so forth (it also usually contains a bit of resentment/hostility). it works here, as it xiaoyu is clearly bothered by xinrens return and her sudden reappearance and casual closeness to ye, as if shes going to lose her.

being envious on the otherhand would be a bit of admiration and discontention, the want of something someone else has, but it doesnt need to contain hostility, just the want. it doesn't really explain the full scale of emotions xiaoyu feels when she thinks of xinren.

due to their overlap though, it is possible for the lines to blur or for someone to experience both. the comment about wanting to have been about the same age and meeting ye earlier is a good example. envy of xinrens shared childhood and experiences with ye, but jealously on the sense that if they did meet earlier they could have formed a stronger relationship and have more expriences together while xinren was still out of yes life.

They've become nearly interchangeable and the difference between the two words is largely contained in the context of their usage. That context is normally obvious, so it's become common to use "jealous" for both meanings anyway. Nice breakdown but it's one of those losing battles that doesn't really change much. It's rarely confusing and in this case, I highly doubt the meaning wasn't obvious because (as I mentioned) the context was clear after having read the chapter.

Glad this is still updated BTW!

--She wants to be the girlfriend
--She has been inching towards this position, in effect, with no obvious competition on the horizon
--This girl shows up and seems awfully close to her girl
--Not jealousy, you say?

I get the distinction you're drawing. I don't buy that it applies to this case.

I like this series a lot. But did we have to have the trope of the returning ex/childhood friend. Those kind of love triangles are so tiresome.
