I'm surprised how many people are surprised by this, maybe it's just the benefit of reading all the way from 1 to 17 in a single sitting but he was clearly involved with the lab in the past by him checking it out and the head researcher recognizing him at the start. The color changing stuff sealed the deal that is was either him or an earlier version of HANA.
