I want to enjoy this manga, but I cannot get pass the fact that there are so many red flags of an unhealthy relationship here. She shouldn’t feel like she needs his permission to hang out with a male friend. He shouldn’t feel like every nice thing a friend does for here is competition. What was that about? He literally stalked her to the point of getting a job at her work. These are problems. His inferiority complex of not being the most important person in her life and this aim to possess her can easily lead to isolating her from her friends, if he chooses not to warm up to them. I’ll keep reading this, but be cautious. This is really not a picture of a healthy relationship at all and people are right to feel creeped out.

What I find interesting about Hananoi is that he's a creepy, obsessive dude that we really shouldn't encourage, all while being relatively innocent and ignorant of the world.

To be clear, when I say innocent I mean how he took the old man's words to the letter: he's looking for someone to love above all else because he considers that that is the only way he will be loved. It's like he got stuck on elementary school in some ways that make it impossible to see the shades of gray.

I'm pretty confident that he wasn't in love with Hotaru beforehand. I may be wrong, but I think that if he was truly a creep that obsessed over her for years, he wouldn't have even considered dating others. He probably realized who she was when he saw her elementary school album and, in his childish way, desired to have been there, to have truly seen Hotaru and comforted her so that he could become her number 1.

But if I'm wrong, he's quite the creep: Girls should stay away.

So I went back and reread the first few chapters and actually find that this later chapter does a lot to lessen Hananoi's creepiness. A lot of the stalker like behavior makes more sense as the actions of a naive boy when you realize that he knows her past possibly even better than she does. He no longer is a random stranger who falls in love with her on a whim (because he wanted to find her after elementary school all along), goes to extremes to make her smile because he already knows her smile before the bullying incident, and even has a reasonable way to know her birthday.
