This story is sheer madness, yet profoundly heartbreaking. Burdened by the village's entrenched customs, Kiichi and Sumiko are unable to comprehend each other's worldview or "language" as Sumiko can only "love" him if he became insiders and tries to tie him to the village by making the sword difficult to access, making it nearly impossible for them to confront one another's true feelings with genuine sincerity and purity like a normal young love story.
While they may find mutual understanding through music, it is a cruel irony that this connection offers no solace in their situations, serving only to deepen their heart-wrenching tragedy.
