I remember when female characters could be boyish and male characters could be girlish, and both could even resent being born their gender without people automatically reading 'trans subtext' into it (usually without any supporting evidence). Good times.

"I wish I was born a boy" is pretty clear, it's not reading into things, we're directly told about it, now if you have an issue with trans people existing that's another issue

Her gender identity issues are due to internalized homophobia though aka "only boys are allowed to like girls, therefore I should've been a boy"

Still, one of the few yuri manga which actually deals with stuff like gender besides "but we're both girls", which is especially refreshing considering that this came out in 2008/09, when more recent works completely gloss over how sexuality can lead people to question their gender identity as well. Morishima Akiko really writes much more realistic yuri than usual imo.
