They didn't say she shouldn't know. They said they wanted the chance to let her down gently first (presumably by telling her) rather than have this sudden situation happen where she's embarrassed in public and with no headsup. They say this on page 8.

For me, it's not the tension or the drama, it's how awkward the situation feels. Kyoko decided to face this head-on when she agreed to go to the "bar". I can't help but admire her for that.
