@googoober Politics and connections. The penalty for their duelling would be suicide - but through his job he had enough influence to be able to send a message to the judge that both parties have participated in the duel and must as such be punished equally. I.e. they both had to commit suicide, or they would both have to imply that everything was a misunderstanding and there had been no duel just some friendly sparring.

Maybe the (recently) crippled would have decided that co-suicide was the best he could get, so agent also riled the cripple enough to get him try to pull his sword, which ended the trial right away.
