In Clannad its end with ml's wife dying in childbirth, that is 'context' they are using
Actually the end is even worse with his child dying in his arms. Well, before the world reboot, of course.

The other bit is that the sketch is likely portraying Kyou, but if that's the case we have to believe the daughter can't recognize her mom. Now, if she was a toddler, MAYBE that could happen, but this seems pretty far fetched (so it's probably what the author is going for, given the track-record). People usually take pictures as well, and I knew from a young age what my mom looked like as a kid, teenager and young adult (maybe this is a point for the "adopted daughter" theory? But even then it sounds like she would have been with Kyou for a long time). Again, this would be less annoying if it wasn't one of the few "narrative developments" that are coming out of this chapter.

I think Midori collecting the drawings and enjoying them as potential surprises with each grocery list is cute, so kudos to the author for coming up with the idea. The fact that she is a gluttonous, daifuku-fueled "guest" is also kind of funny (I guess that comes from Kyou).

Where is this going? Probably nowhere. I need my dose of nonsensical plot points, damn it!
I uh... I don't know what my parents looked like.

I've seen a photo of my mom in her... Mid/Late 20s early 30s? This is the youngest I've ever seen her (she had me at 29). If you showed me an image of her at 17-22 (high school - early higher ed age), I probably wouldn't recognize her depending on her haircut.

Same for my dad; the youngest I've seen is... Maybe younger than 12 (unidentified generic boy in generic clothes from unidentified year, post 1950 considering architecture) and maybe late 20s-Mid 30s? (Family photo while a deceased family member was alive)

Again, depending on context and hairstyle, I probably wouldn't recognize an early 20s photo. I knew he had a mullet at some point in the 80s/90s (he told me), but before that he looked like... All my other uncles, and it doesn't help that he gained about 40-60lb since his 20s before I was born.

Apparently he looked similar to me from a year and a half ago when he was that age so... A generic guy from the region?

My parents do have photos, I just... Never saw them. So from my view, it's pretty reasonable Minori does't recognize a sketch of her mom from 17 years ago.

"She's a leech" was kinda all most of them had going for them, so once it was proven that she was contributing to the household, they had nothing to complain about. Now the only thing people have to whine about is who the girl's father is
They complained about her ditzy behaviour, premise of the story, and how there's been almost 0 comment of if she's informed MC of her circumstances in depth

Well, I'll be. I hope you get a chance to sit down and take a look at the pictures (assuming it's not a touchy subject), it can be fun to look at old pics, maybe hear some stories about when/where they were taken and so on. I am honestly surprised, but I guess it does happen, after all.

Spoiler tabs cuz the response is long*

Okay, so I went through the family album which would be mostly 25-40 for mom and late 30s-55 for dad.

I'm certain that if you showed the early photos of my parents to me-from-yesterday with everyone else removed, I would not recognize them. Even in some of the later (after I was 3) photos.

I've always had access, but never went through the album.

These were mostly casual at home, in public, or traveling photos. Multiple family meetups (birthdays) and a couple weddings (a couple formal & traditional dress images).

Mom was 29 and Dad was 42 when I was born.

I recognize my direct family through clothing and hair more than their faces.

I simply cannot recognize my mom with short hair. She never had subshoulder length hair after I was 3.

I recognized her by glasses (she semi-consistently wears rounded square glasses) when her hair was short or not at all. When her hair is long, tied or not, I can usually recognize her, especially if it's plumed out (like a cobra).

I want to say I vaguely recognize her lower face structure (below eyes) but not from straight on.

I think there was a photo of her in her super early 20s/late teens; she might not actually be in the photo (1 girl, and 1 of my uncles).

I consistently recognize my dad in later photos by his shirts & hairlines (white hairs) and can faintly recognize him through jaw/cheek structure & smile in early ones.

He has consistently wore some of these shirts for 10+ years (after I was born), and I regularly use/used his hairline to find him in crowds (I have mixed other men with similar hair coloration for him, even of different ethnicities). He gained and kept a lot of weight after his late 30s.

I had trouble recognizing him in the early photos because he dyed (and permed) his hair, but through context and rough "familiarity" (cheek bone and smile) figured it out. With a lil practice it got real easy, and I was predisposed to his appearance during the era.

My situation does differ from Minori's by a lot:

1) My parents were not 19-22 in these photos.

2) Both my parents were much older than Kyou when I was born.

3) Both my parents were immigrants, and some of these photos were taken in other countries then the one I spent my whole life in (occasional culture shock).

4) Dad was work-from-home.

5) I stopped seeing my mom at 12 (less than 50 total hours of visual contact over multiple years).

6) I'm older than Minori.

7) Minori can't recognize a sketch, wheras I'm lookin at photos.

Experience was neat, saw some more photos of my dad-side grandma (she passed before I was born). I pretty easily recognized my aunts and uncles in those images, but to be fair they were already 40-late 50s. They only got more frail, saggy, and white hair.

I'm surprised I picked out my cousins so easily, and almost entirely by face. Most of them were in their 20s, some were late teens. Face-wise, they didn't change (from what I recalled).

Mom's-side photos were neat, but I didn't recognize most of them. To be expected, but I know for a fact I've met some of them (multiple times) in person and still can't tell who is who in the photos.
