The language used could mean something else, and the author is deceiving us, I mean 'best friends big day' does not exclude the idea that the MC isn't marrying her, I know best friends who got married and still call each other bestie rather than husband/wife.

The only way I can see for this to be a ruse is for the "big day" to be a gala or fashion show or something of that nature and the dress is just one she's finally mustered up the courage to show off in front of others, rather than a marriage ceremony.
