Not really. They probably did drink more wine/beer than we do today but water was still the main drink so long as it came from a clean source.
Clean drinking water could be hard to find, though. A farmstead with their own well was good, but in a city it was a much more difficult proposition. Hence the invention of smallbeer, with a low alcohol content. If the water was bad the beer would turn out undrinkable, so it was sort of a quality control.
In the wine belt diluted wine was a standard drink. Drinking it straight would put everyone out of commission by the afternoon, and hungover the next day.
