If there's one thing i don't envy Japan for is the high price on good food. Over here with that amount of money you'd get three packs with a lot of strawberries. The way i've seen some manga represent normal fruit as some premium expensive thing is kind of depressing.

You're misunderstanding something here, Japan sells normal reasonably priced fruits and special premium fruits that had lots of extra work was put in to them (For example cutting most fruits off plant so more nutrients go to the remaining ones). The premium ones can't be mass produced and takes more time and effort to produce thus are inevitably expensive. We hear more about the latter outside of Japan as they're a novelty to us (and they're an item marketed at tourists).
Also just to be clear 'premium' in this context is not the same as 'organic', it's "above" that.

Yes one of my most vivid memories of my trip to Japan 20 years ago was seeing peaches that went for like 5$ each, needless to say they remained on the shelf... As a tourist the places where normal people shop are out of your way, you only get to see the rare "premium" greengrocers in the sightseeing areas.
