I would have to guess a mixture of the two. I would also guess that the amout of gas pushed out determinds how loud the fart Is.

Just "he" (T/N: he means fart in Japanese). Would've translated the joke the same either way, but coincidentally 'he' in Japanese music notation is the same note as 'fa', so if the pitch of Mamoru's farts ever comes up again I won't have translated myself into a corner.
