That's seems to be a common attitude in manga. You don't help someone out unless you have feelings for them or repaying some sort of a debt or favor. As long as you're not a doormat character that everyone uses as their gofer, other people's problems should be none of your concern.

Not sure how common that attitude is irl in Japan, but it very much serves to paint the MC as "the special guy who's super generous (without that much effort) so girls can like him for it" for the audience.
