If I followed the line of this conversation correctly, they're only tenuously related by marriage and adoption—that is, the other guy is the nephew of the wife of our protagonist's father (and said wife is not our protagonist's mother, but was pretty much forced to take him into the family).

Still potentially awkward as hell, even if incest isn't really the problem. ^^;
