Edward III and the dozen rulers that preceded him since William the Conqueror were native French speakers. The Kings, nobles, commanders, and knights of both sides were reading, writing, and speaking French, with few exceptions. The 100 years war was essentially a squabble over which ruler had the better claim to rule France. If both sides have essentially the same culture, then it's hard not to root for the side fighting against the invading force.
