Prostitution guild work. WTF Japan. You're the world leading #1 compensated country in the world but still, bruh, this is messed up.

Maybe we should re-nuke Japan again.
Ah yes let's nuke japan because ONE person that is in japan did something bad. With that logic LETS JUST NUKE THE ENTIRE FRICKING WORLD
Oh also did you miss the part where this was fiction??
PS: It wasn't prostitution work he was just giving a path from the brothel to the quest

While I agree that Japan shouldn't be nuked again, they have a lot of major issues with youth and, in particular, Japanese teen women being forced into the sex industry because that's the last line of being able to make money and survive.

Then there's the fact it was only recently they made pedophilia illegal. As well as college rape gangs (includes paying off bartenders in college areas to ignore what several gangs of men do to women). A 99% conviction rate, a good chunk of which comes from police finding more honor in looking right and not necessarily being right. Then there's the racism—a lot of racism. Then there's the....

Once you dig into things, you may understand why some people have massive issues with the country. Not deserving to be nuked, of course. And it's not like other countries don't have massive issues, either.

Oh, and while this time the brothel was being used as a landmark, she did actually work there in an earlier chapter for an adventurers guild quest.

That's just an overpopulation issue though?

One sentence. China is worse, by a landslide
Yeah they got some problems but I love their culture and Japanese people are one of the most friendliest (Excluding the non friendly) people

What chapter? And also even if she did that's her choice

1st) It's not overpopulation, especially since Japan is in a bit of a crisis when it comes to not enough young people being born.

Part of the issue is how most companies there hire: They could just hire more people and give reasonable hours for reasonable pay, but instead there are lots of companies that would rather work a smaller pool of employees to near death. This is partially due to Japanese culture (overworking and honor and stuff) and partially due to modern values (moving away from families with one breadwinner to every person working, as well as marrying later in life, and Japanese tendency towards introversion/not bothering others exaggerating that effect), and partially due to companies being greedy.

2nd) I understand China is worse by a landslide. Japan, however, can feel worse because we read manga and take in this entertainment culture, and don't expect it. Kind of like when a member of a clergy commits a crime, because we expect better, the deeds feel worse than if any non-clergy commits the same crime. We expect China to be worse, we don't expect Japan to be that bad when we first find out what happens behind/away from the tourist traps.

3rd) It was when she was introduced and just after the receptionist was complaining about jobs that were almost expired. Was that perhaps earlier in the same chapter?

Regardless of morals, the brothel even asking for temporary help is suspicious (bad management, problematic customers, etc?) and the job nearly expiring (no other woman—or man, apparently—wanted the job, so the pay was at least not worth it), and the femal guild receptionist's attitude towards it tells me that kind of work isn't well regarded within the world, at least by some (though since she seems fine with being part of a harem, perhaps it's just this particular brothel).

Even if Japan has some problems that are worse than other countries, I'm only interested in the culture anyway.
Love the food, sushi is my favourite food of all time, I love the traditional buildings and swords, I love manga & anime, I love the music, the people of Japan are pretty friendly and fun to be with, I also love the language.
Welp, got a bit carried away there, well anyway I love the culture, not the country

Can't remember that, but even if it did happen it's a different world remember? A world where killing is normalized, where nobles still exist, rape is much more common, it's common sense for a guy to have more than one woman (Seems like it since the demon lord was completely fine with it at least) Etc. So you can't be that surprised

PS: Thank you for not being aggressive and making good points without being arguey at all

Hardly. The Japanese are masters of the fake smile.
They're culturally obligated to always present as polite and friendly, regardless of how they actually feel.
Not only that, this kind of deceit is so normalised to them that taking their words literally will just piss them off (not that they'd let it show).

Why are we having wars in the comments when we could just have fun watching this little shit be tortured to death?

I'm just gonna assume this spoiled sadistic POS noble kid is the son of that ugly bastard slaver noble who used to "own" Meili when she was still a slave, and sent his men to capture her after she escaped. The same fat guy who knelt for mercy in front of the MC after one look. Too bad he just let him go after he merely promised never to go after the girl again.

Be remind you that japan are facing decline birthrate last 10 years.
And yes, prostitution is a thing in JP too, have you ever know about a place call "soap-land" ? Try to googling it and you will understand.
So it's not quite rare to found 1-2 series got this thing tho

It's funny how the reason that this unnecessary discussion began was because they misinterpreted something and then were too ashamed to admit.
(She never worked as a prostitute).

I do not wish to take away your enjoyment of those things. In fact, I believe those things could still be had without the issues the other parts of their culture cause.

As for why I went into the commentary on their society... I'm not entirely sure anymore. But that certainly was a rabbit hole, wasn't it?

I don't remember being surprised at anything. I didn't even say she was a prostitute, and I certainly didn't judge her for it. I just pointed out that it was considered a strange job and showed why it was a strange job.

Also, thank you for your level-headed responses as well.

No one said she worked as a prostitute. I just got off on an, admittedly unrelated to the story, tangent after someone made an unreasonable comment about nuking Japan for the third time.

Also, we don't know exactly what she did at that brothel.

The job was about to expire, it was females only, one night only, there was an interview, it paid extremely and unusually well, and the receptionist girl said it was a strange request.

Then, at the beginning of this chapter, we see her in a revealing dress with a guy who looks like his dream came true while directly looking at and engaging in conversation with her.

Whether she was just the receptionist or was one of the girls on offer, we'll probably never know for sure. Even the guild didn't know.
