Moto is very good at exploring a world of feelings between her characters, and they are all very well defined. She has worked out that a relationship between two characters isn't interesting if you aren't interested in those characters in their own right...

Incidentally, a live action film (1999-nen no natsuyasumi) was made based off this manga. Without giving any spoilers to either the film or the manga, it makes a number of very significant changes to the plot, almost to the point of being a new work, but captures the key essence in a number of ways. Also highly recommended.
