While it does make the story less generic, I can't say I'm not disappointed in her.

It makes the story super generic. Less generic would be if there was a full page "THE END" afterwards. You know we're going to get some hand-wringing drama followed by a standard shounen manga redemption and a 1980's-sitcom hug at the end. Barf.

She has a evident lack of self-control from the start of the story.
If anything, I suspect she's going to buy the bike and everyone is going to be so fucking disappointed that guilt and reality are going to come crashing down on her, and then she's going to sell the bike to pay everyone back and that's the way her character will grow.
