I'm thinking the original owner of the house underwent self-mummification in a hidden room behind the altar. That was old and banned Buddhist practice. Exactly the sort of thing one would find if you were a grieving heir to a fallen family looking for meaning in (an old family?) collection of religious texts.

Hence the want to avoid the police. They'd discover the hidden corpse and it would cause problems.

Actually how would that line up, timeline wise? Yo-chan died in 2006, first murder house was bought in 2016? So the cousin would be 9 - 10... is that still young enough and small enough to be crawling through those small spaces?

It's probably more complicated than this but what if the grandpa asked the cousin to help take care off the alter, helping him climb to clean and got him killed ? that's why they don't want the police involved so the grandpa won't be in trouble, could be as simple as that but the aunt saying "I should have noticed sooner" tells me there is more to it

I'd like to point out that a recap at the beginning of a chapter of a monthly manga isn't such a bad idea.

The first floorplan was a complete one that was fully filled out. And it was messed up.

The second floorplan was an incomplete one whose extra parts had to be puzzled out to fill out. And it was more messed up.

And now this third one doesn't exist at all, and has to be reconstructed from 20 year old memories.

When they finally start to get the plan down properly the results are going to be absolutely horrific.

I can't wait!
