Did not even know Japanese had a cursive system.

i'm sure there's diff handwriting styles but i imagine they'd stick to a specific type for school but it just looks like fancy calligraphy to me

Basically it's handwritten kanji that fell out of use, I think around the early 1900s. From what I understand, nowadays most Japanese people would struggle to read it. But if you're interested in reading old texts, it would be a useful thing to learn.
