Been working through some of Oku's older stuff this week. I made it to chapter 51 before tossing in the towel on this one.
I thought at first Oku was setting up all of these characters and threads to, you know, actually DO something with them. But it seems like he didn't have a plan to bring it all together. Characters never develop, characters disappear for long stretches of time, forced melodramatic action gets inserted out of nowhere.
Was hoping for some of Oku's signature weirdness, or his humor, or his ability to create schlock entertainment, but it seems he wasn't on that level yet in the mid 90s when he wrote this.
