You know, you don't need to read to know the scriptures.

From what I remember about Hypatia.
The thing against her wasn't that she was smart, it was what she believe and teach.
In those times there were much conflict about the early christians and the remnants of the roman authority. What the christian faith was and how it worked and was practiced was still developing, there were plenty of factions with conflicting dogmas. Hypatia was caught in this turmoil.

@FlamingSquirrel @Panino I guess you guys are overthinking it. It was exactly what mutter said - Miriam absolutely had to suffer and be killed this brutal way to make sure she goes to heaven because the door of heaven will more likely open to that one who suffered, not that one who never knew pain and labor. That's why they started from her hand, obviously. And, if anyone is interested why they killed her - she said that she threw away the food which means she (maybe) wasn't drugged which makes her an unwanted witness they must get rid of.

By the way, Wikipedia says the following:
