So what exactly is "that" device? 🤨 Because I don't really see it's relation to the "chastity" vow other than as an "inspection" tool.

You know, you don't need to read to know the scriptures.
The knowledge wasn't passed orally? You went to the church, the sacerdote would read and talk about some passage, and you learned this way. People were used to remember thing they heard.

From what I remember about Hypatia.
The thing against her wasn't that she was smart, it was what she believe and teach.
In those times there were much conflict about the early christians and the remnants of the roman authority. What the christian faith was and how it worked and was practiced was still developing, there were plenty of factions with conflicting dogmas. Hypatia was caught in this turmoil.
At least is what I think.

In page 18, instead of "roman" isn't instead "romani" (gypsy)?

Page 25, "a snake". Yeah, right.

Page 33, nice touch, their pupil really became bigger after they eat.

A metaphor, maybe, to say "no matter how many times and how hard you knocks on that door (if you did this it'd eat your skin, right?), it'll not open".

Nice catch, actually. Since Kaya started the conversation from events that happened in ancient Rome, it was easy to assume she is Roman too. Muct re-check it.
@FlamingSquirrel @Panino I guess you guys are overthinking it. It was exactly what mutter said - Miriam absolutely had to suffer and be killed this brutal way to make sure she goes to heaven because the door of heaven will more likely open to that one who suffered, not that one who never knew pain and labor. That's why they started from her hand, obviously. And, if anyone is interested why they killed her - she said that she threw away the food which means she (maybe) wasn't drugged which makes her an unwanted witness they must get rid of.

Yes, I understand, but pay attention to what the Mother says just before the torture and how she holds the girl's hand.
Why that form of violence, exactly? Why mutilate her hand, specifically?

And by the way, "in Ancient Rome"?
Hypatia lived and died in Alexandria, Egypt.

I think author did a lot of research.
By the way, Wikipedia says the following:

Hypatia[a] (born c. 350–370; died 415 AD)[1][5] was a Hellenistic Neoplatonist philosopher, astronomer, and mathematician, who lived in Alexandria, Egypt, then part of the Eastern Roman Empire.

About the hand, just like I said before, Miriam was supposed to knock on heaven's door, that's why. Also, in the chapter one the cleric said people will be free from their injures in the kingdom of God.
