Yeah, Japan has been really reluctant when it comes to digital banking and financial services in general. Heck, a shocking number of folks over there feel more comfortable keeping their disposable cash on their rail passes than a more western-traditional bank card. I'm not exactly sure they're wrong.

It’s because of JR. they completely dominate most rail systems and Japan actually uses their public transit networks + they make most of their money through other things such as hotels etc.

and because western banks aren’t competitive enough to make their cards useable literally anywhere like in the US
