right, because you should always try/experiment new techniques in the middle of a fight with a monster very capable of quickly closing distance and turning you into a smudge with one blow, instead of safely trying them beforehand and knowing if they even do anything at all, or worse, only blows up in your face.

Think it was more that they didn't have the ability to surround it, before it could take out their front line. I can easily see small teams of adventurers or soldiers getting rushed down before they can think of an effective strategy to counter this threat.

The more egregious error is that they could have been attacking it from above, below, or from the sides at the same time. While not nearly as effective, it would have allowed them to stall it or even destabilize it's footing to enabling them to then bypass the shield and attack the main body.

But judging by that last page, the mangka/author had ulterior motives, and needed their OC to show off a little.

The main issue for me is that this thing has been causing some serious damage to a major trade route. Such a thing always prompts a quick, coordinated response. I can certainly buy that small groups would get overwhelmed, especially if they had no word of warning. However, they had ample time to coordinate, as well as try multiple strategies. For example, if they thought that the whole armor set had the anti-magic property, the darn thing's head was exposed the entire time. Humans are a lot more violent and adaptive than many writers give them credit for. That being said, it ultimately comes down to MC wank, as you say, and as I said previously, it's not a deal breaker for me, but it is disappointing.

If the strongest shield and the strongest spear collide, the shield will probably win, since you also require enough power to use the spear to its full potential, and if they're that strong, you need something stronger than a head-on lance hit.

Can't block all directions at once. Quantity is its own quality. But if that's been a menace for long enough that should've been a tried tactic. If something has a shield, you don't always attack it from the front.

Of course that's what you do. If you show them off beforehand, then it's like if you show a plan before executing it. It will always fail or go awry. If you don't show your hand before, it has a much higher chance of success.
