I mean this is entirely in character for him. Just last chapter we learned how in the past in tested out his method of flying across the seas and failed multiple times while doing it and he doesn't really learn because he doesn't have to learn. Like it's yet to not work. Plus that it is a role the side characters have. Keeping him grounded in reality.
