Don't drink coffee first thing in the morning! I get it, hot beverage that's bitter, helps wake you up; take a hot shower instead, maybe lightly scald some milk in a double boiler, anything but having caffeine too early! Caffeine interacts with the same receptors that the chemical that causes you to get sleepy and not think clearly interacts with, and consuming it early actually inhibits clearing your brain chemistry of that chemical! Wait two hours after waking up before having some, it's much better for you all around!
Depends if coffee has any effect on you. It doesn't on me. Though I don't drink coffee in the morning, too much trouble rather nap that time, so I usually drink the first midday while having lunch, or after coming home from work in the afternoon. And on weekends, I usually sleep late, so, midday again..

If coffee "doesn't have any effect", you are either A) part of the rare percentage of population that has higher-than-average neuroreceptors (including those for adenosine, which caffeine binds to), so the dosage of caffeine isn't sufficient to affect them; B) part of the less-rare group with CYP1A2 gene expression that means you metabolize caffeine much quicker (effectively the same result as people in A, but with regular # of adenosine receptors); C) being affected but without realizing it because it isn't making you jittery or any of the other outwardly noticable symptoms of excessive caffeine; or D) part of the much larger portion of people lying through their teeth for various reasons.
