I'm not saiyng selfless people won't exist at all, but you will find out that the amount of people willing to put others above oneself for the sake of selflessness is far, far lower than the those who would embrace self-indulgence. And that's in our world, where most believe in some sort of Karma. Imagine in one that has no such thing.

Every post-apocalypse work emphasizes that, because that's just how living beings work on a basic level - self-preservation trumps all.

This line of thinking doesnt line up with Homo Sapien evolution and history at all. Humans by nature is a social pack animal where self-sacrifice for the packs survival has been the norm for hundreds of thousands of years. This is based on the need to secure a greater chance that your offspring survive.

It is only in this modern ages megacitys we see this behavior being prevalent, mostly due to the individuals lacking the need for self-sacrifice as the pack will survive just on its own thanks to its shear volume of humans.

Most authors of post-apocalyptic storys just fail to understand that basic human nature is just like every other animal. That its actually the survival of the offspring that trumps all, only after that comes self-preservation.
