Classic follow-up to the "you're just like me" from someone u consider scum.

Hoping for an interesting choice from mc instead of the usual cliche choice every mc makes.

I don't know how successful the kid will be, but I hope he is able to persevere on this bloodless path.

@Spartanus the missing city lord (old guy who ate the little girl's soul and got killed a few chapters ago) is the ancestor/patriarch of the family being attacked. The city lord also used to be a disciple of the Soul Controlling Sect that the MC is from, but presumably left and went renegade to gain power and ended up as city lord.

The Soul Controlling Sect can't/won't allow traitors. Now that the Senior Sister disciple knows the dead city lord was a traitor, the disciples need to finish the punishment and exterminate his family.

A lot of the motivations are due to the cultural norms of prestige and loyalty in ancient China that xianxia settings are heavily influenced by.

Heresy is a better execution of the genre than most, but some of that execution is not spelling everything out in detail - which assumes the reader has pre-existing context to work with. Like how western-based fantasy uses kings and knights and wizards with the expectations that readers have at least a basic idea of what those concepts generally are.

The punishment is just a pretense, the bald cultivator that was cultivating prisoners had the senior sister kill them as payment for what he gave her. The death of the Patriarch basically meant the family lost their protection.

@tyhkol - That's one of those tropes that I wish would just die alongside 'goblins in this setting are all male hur hur hur'. Not just shared family culpability and punishment but also frequently everyone in a family functionally having the same character down to the neurons. It almost always comes across as lazy writing and frequently leaves a bad taste.

Anyway, if he was going to have this crisis of conscience he could have had it outside. He's just bringing down the whole room.
A guy shouldn't have to perform emotional splits between concern for a kid and resolve to die by said kid's blade.

great worldbuilding.

hope MC can gather his mettle and do what is necessary; i.e. wreak carnage.

It's kind of weird looking at this series now in light of recent events. The way the series revolves around harvesting creatures and monsters body parts for consumption to gain mistycal powers makes you think about how people from modern China are still eating exotic animals from the wild to this day.....and with dire consequences for the rest of us

@Saf1
you say recent events but at the same time say that this is an ongoing practice from way back when which seems like kind of a paradox to me.

It's not like this type of genre is new either, this idea of hunting rare creatures to gain power exists in a multitude of manhua, and to a lesser extent, in some fantasy manga as well. The idea of humans exploiting nature's resources for their personal gain is one pretty much intertwined with all of human history, and can be applied to the idea of oil, overfishing, deforestation, etc. It's just that in these fantasy worlds, there seems to be no real limit to these "limited" resources, and the resource in these cases, can kill you if you don't handle them properly. They never really seem to focus on the limited nature of these things because it not only bogs down the sense of adventure with the guilt of causing so-and-so species going extinct, and because gaining the power to not die is more immediately important to the inhabitants of the fantasy worlds.

Why even join a "kill a whole family" party, if you're going to pout over your morals?

The lack of direction and resolve from the MC is wearing me down.
