Given the tone of the series... I feel like the MC is going to be tricked into wounding the demon bird to use her blood and tribulations to reforge the sword. Then everyone will start fighting over the opportunity to kill the bird, during which it completes the tribulations. The bird probably dies defending the MC at the last moment, and the MC ends up being the last man standing. Cat goes hehehe and congratulates him for getting a demon core to help his cultivation.

Just a guess, but we're told that the demon core helps establishing your foundation - which conveniently puts the MC back onto the same pace as the inner sect disciples (ex. the tsundere girl from 30 chapters ago) who each receive a foundation establishing pill, IIRC.
