Maybe it's only in the English speaking world but I feel that this is one of Tezuka's more underrated works. While maybe there are times when the story could flow better, I think it's still a great tale about Japan as it was on the verge of quite a transformation. The story takes place in an old Japan that is being increasingly colored by Western medicine and other influences, but it hasn't become feverish yet. While some might dismiss Tezuka's art as being too cartoony, I think it still serves these more realistic characters fairly well, even if exaggerating their passion occasionally (often for comedic effect). There are details that I think show a little more care to things like backgrounds, too. I don't think this is one with as wide appeal as say, Black Jack, but mature readers with some interest in history might like it very much.

The order of pages is messed up in chapter 39. From page 169.

Chapter 42 is also messed up starting from page 53.
