I feel like they really could have probably rappelled or climbed down into this courtyard and skipped the mines entirely if they'd only just explored the area a bit.

Yeah, when you think about it there was like 0 point going through the mines if they found a way to climb down the cliffside. But then again, they'd never meet Igarashi if they didn't, and that guy probably has the most vampiric knowledge on the Island.
