Something that always pissed me off about Sotsu is the fact that it just showed Rena looking at this tragedy and never actually remembering it or anything in the next fragments. There is literally no reason to make her see that unless you're planning something big.

I hope Meguri does something with this.

Well, if you think about it, the shard are not "resets", each one is a paralel world that if are created too often create ripples that affect all the shards as "deja vu" flashback moments.

Even if Satoko is playing deaf to the reality, shes literally dooming many of her friends not only to death, but also to live with that permanent thrauma for those who survive. I think those scenes are showing that: Current Rena might not remember that specific scene, but Satoko did screw up some Rena's life permanently while killing most of the village alongside the way which is a terrific act

It was really there just to answer why she seemed crazy while she tried to describe what happened to Keiichi. It just needed to be something really shocking. That said, yeah, I hope Meguri uses memory leaks to give the club an actual role in the finale.

Then why weren't any ripples created when they were just repeating fragment after fragment in Sotsu? Otherwise, why set the stage like that if you aren't going to use it? That is why Sotsu fell short and became a shitshow.

Having only two characters resolve their petty conflicts, Satoko and Rika, and not involving any of the other club members into it makes for a bad taste in my mouth.

Something like the mass infection seen here seems like set up to give everyone something to do in a final arc. Could have hordes of L5 infected basically being the new mountain dogs before a more personal conflict between Rika and Satoko.

Same way in the original Higurashi series there were relatively few ripples despite Rika lived around a century while doing loops. It probably need a massive ammount of loops for characters to start having "glitches".

Multiple realities in Higurashi are hinted to exist even without the time/shard hpping, but probably only abusing it a lot creating tons of branches for the same place at around the same time is when things start become messy
