The ones we have here in Sweden have that sweet and sour taste a lot of berries have. They're most definitely not bland, and absolutely delicious. The exact taste depends on how mature they are. And about as small as the tip of a pinky finger.



It strongly depends on where in the world you get them. As far as I know, American strawberries are huge, but relatively watery. The ones here are smaller but have a much stronger taste.

That also goes for just about anything people eat that's grown. Less significant with meat, but that's still not exactly what it was before humans.


If they are like ours, they're what we cultivated strawberries from, so they are more or less what they were originally.

I live in the equator line where there's plenty of rainforest. Not sure if the climate might not be good for wild strawberries to be sweet.

Yeah, that's a slight bit different from where I live. Northern Europe, which is about as far north as the middle of Hudson Bay for an American equivalence.

Good for oregon. But realistically speaking, those wild strawberries probably grew from a cultivated strawberries's seed. Dunno how though. Maybe someone went camping and it grew and expanded from there?

it seems that Native Americans in the Oregon area used to gather wild strawberries from the woods for longer than we have records. The ones that are cultivated were brought by around 1846 by the Quaker Henderson Luelling.
Actually Strawberries originate from America so they likely spread through the continent and the cultivated ones actually originate from eastern North America, and were brought to Brittany where they were originally selectively bred.
So the wild strawberries in Oregon likely were always rather similar to the way they are now. I am unsure how sweet the strawberries they originally used for selective breeding were, but the end result is much more bland than the wild ones that have been common in Oregon since before Europeans stepped foot on the continent.

The thing is that strawberries, especially the wild ones, are basically temperate/cold-climate opportunists, for which their fruiting bodies are really an "afterthought".

What you'd get in the tropics is that, not unlike incorrectly managed greenhouses, or for that matter a lousy dutch summer, they either won't flower at all, or if they do, the strawberries would develop too rapidly and taste like nothing because they won't have the time to accumulate sugar.
And that is if the mold,bugs, and parasites wouldn't get to them first.

Technically it's not impossible, but you'll have to build a "greenhouse" that's both a fridge and a dehumidifier to create the conditions, in order, to have strawberries flower, and then produce decent strawberries in the tropics.

yep. it do be like that. we do have stawberry farm here, but like you said, it's in a green house. and in the mountainous region so it's cooler.

the wild strawberries trivia that started all this is told by the farmer of said farm.
