Wishing the author a swift recovery.
And thank you for the translation, hope your right leg comes back from the grave.
Things with Himawari are turning out much more complicated than anticipated. And while it doesn't excuse her behaviour, what we have seen from the mother in this chapter... explains a lot about her behaviour.
... But man, the Japanese really don't know the meaning of subtlety. Compared to the previous chapters we are speeding on a highway to make Himawari's mother a complete bitch.
I just binge read this whole thing in 6 hours or so....this is honestly some of my favorite castwork possible
I don't know if I'll express this accurately but this is 'life' - a group of dysfunctional people to varying degrees but compounding misunderstandings and growing resentments cause more harm
The hurt of others causing impact on each other, and the social discomforts of confronting those realities
I know which way this story ends - the juxtaposition between 'forgiveness' (self/others) and the rightful apathy and resentment all these characters should have but I'm glad I got to discover this one.
I like Himawari. Frankly she is my favorite character in this manga. She is so complicated as if she is one of female protagonists walking right out of one of Dostoyevsky's novel. In particular, she reminds me of Nastasya from Dostoyevsky's The Idiot. Both are broken, hysterical, self-destructive. They used to be very nice girl. But life just stabbed them again and again until they put on this cynical mask as self-protection. It's human nature. And let's not forget that in Yurika's memory Himawari was really nice before high school. Yurika's way of befriending people was learnt' from her. It's just ...
Her parents started living apart about 3-5 years ago and she has lived with her mother ever since as she feels it's her responsibility to take care of that wretched woman. But it simply turned into a mutual torment for both and she began to fall apart soon.
Also Himawari's personality was pretty twisted due to her environment. She was in a sort of self-fulfilliing prophecy as she deemed herself unworthy so she deliberately acted like a bitch to push people who care about her or she cares about away. And since it worked in some sense (as Yurika was both reluctant to let her be and also repulsed by her behavior), she was able to reaffirm her conviction that she was unworthy and unable to acknowledge other's love and kindness towards her....
Yeah, pretty nasty personality, I get it. (I understand her since I know that deep down I am really like her. But like people say, a happy childhood will cure one for his whole life, while a miserable one takes one's entire life to heal.)
