This series might just exaggerate how school life is at these countries, but it's ridiculous if there is some semblance to it. Popularity status affecting who you can make friends with is just a ridiculous concept.
it may be exaggerated a bit but its a pretty real thing there. you also see this kinda concept a lot in other manga/anime. popular person makes friends with supposed delinquent, loner, otaku, etc + everyone around them questioning why and stuff like that.
