I mean, in some games they program the characters based just on superficial data and then don't think deeper about it.

So in such a game it would be "she said she didn't want school to see us together, so I pretend to not see her" as a good choice.

But in this game that choice gets lumped together with "ignore her", because the correct answer is more along the line of "I can't stand being without her, so I talk to her" and she likes that feeling (alternately she was lonely), so her affection goes up.
