It's be great... if not for Umaru herself. I read the whole series expecting her to develop, and she never did.

I don't get how people can enjoy such an obnoxious character. Even by the end of the series she hasn't really changed. She still has her big brother doing literally everything at home after he already financially supports them both, and the only time she decides to finally do something for him is when she's concerned he'll break down, because then him struggling would impact her life.

RIP the inspiration behind Umaru.

It's sad enough that she passed away from a terminal illness in 2017, but it's made so much worse when you read that she was diagnosed and hospitalized for it at the time when the Umaru anime and merch were selling well and the series was at its peak. All the success and recognition was marred with bitter-sweetness and mourning.

He was barely able to do the final volume because drawing the character became immensely difficult on an emotional & psychological level as a result of his sister's passing.
