Good ending. You still have to wonder whether the girl he saw at the end is actually Kiriko or not, though, because that's not really what she looked like. It's also possible that that's somehow his and her daughter, too. I think that having a sort of open ending like that is nice.

I was dreading that the epilogue would end up revealing that the mother is now setting up a new village somewhere else or the box is now doing something with another host but no... we actually got a sweet ending. That was beautiful.

The mother's inability to recognize the root cause of her circumstances and her projection of issues instead onto her daughter, and the festering of that mess of emotion into a curse with centuries of consequences... It all pulled together into a quite nice horror about familial harm.

Kiriko clearly wasn't human as a newborn, but newborns in general often look weird. Maybe she would have become beautiful in a different way on her own in time.

On another note, is it just me or does the chapter with the terminally ill guy seem out of place now.

Specifically the part where his coworker got an entire female body from the neck down.

She should have joined the village but we don't see her again?

The other villagers all looked pieced together, they tore that other girl apart, and Kiriko was pieced together bit by bit, it doesn't make sense that they were able to give coworker a complete unblemished body in one go?
