Would be nice to see how he practiced and improved rather than just say he practiced and improve. I don't mind underdog abilities-I love them, in fact. But, the way in which I love them is that they're misunderstood in how they should be used. Not just they were super ultra broken in the beginning rather than you've been trying to play chess as if it were checkers and/or vice versa.
For now, we're told he just trained his way out of the previous limitations of a Puppet Master. Perhaps it is just the case that it is a hard ability to reign in, and/or that people don't have the time or desire to do so. Sense Golem are manufactured by some other source than the users, does it have something to do with how they're wired with magic circuits? I almost want to say it has something to with coding required by part of the Puppet Master. Maybe even the materials they're made from.
But I don't know. I just know he trained hard under house arrest.
